On the defensive side of the ball, relative to the offensive, the Buffalo Bills didn’t have the performance they wanted. While the offense was busy surpassing long-standing team records, the defense, more or less, was just there to occupy the field while the offense was on the sidelines.

While they did have their moments in the sun, I’m looking at you Taron Johnson and Justin Zimmer, they did not soak it up all season. Ranking 27th in the league in rushing touchdowns allowed (21), 23rd in yards per carry (4.6) and 25th in rushing first downs (125) Buffalo has some work to do.

Where a common problem on the offensive side of the ball that will impact the defense, is the NFL salary cap that is projected to go down. As a result, names like Matt Milano may be on the bubble to hit the free agency market. While retaining Milano is surely on Brandon Beane’s radar this offseason, getting the deal done won’t be as easy as it sounds. With so much money tied up into the defensive line, players on that unit, and some other sacrificial lambs, will need to be released to free up room for the 2021 cap.

Entering the offseason now after losing handily to the Kansas City Cheifs, addressing the defense will be mandatory. Seeing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense pressure Kansas City enough to hold them touchdown-less emphasises the changes that will need to be made more than ever.

These are the top three takeaways for the Buffalo Bills defense from the 2020 NFL season.
