The Buffalo Bills are now in offseason mode after their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. The big event in the offseason is the NFL Draft, which will take place the final weekend in April.

The loss to the Chiefs finalized the Bills spot in the first round and they are now set to select 30th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. This is a bit of uncharted territory for the Bills as they have never selected a player in the first round this late in the NFL Draft.

The last time they were this close though the Bills made a good pick with Tre’Davious White, who was selected 27th after the team traded back with the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the Patrick Mahomes deal.

The Bills however have made one pick in their franchise history at 30th overall. That took place in 1970 when they selected quarterback Dennis Shaw. However, at that time the 30th overall pick was part of the second round of the NFL Draft and that draft included 17 rounds instead of the now-standard seven.

It isn’t necessarily a guarantee that the Bills will be waiting that long on Thursday night to make their first pick with general manager Brandon Beane running the show. He has shown he will be aggressive and move around during the NFL Draft.

He recently was asked about this on WGR550 and joked by saying they wouldn’t have to stay up that late.

The other picks the Bills have are their original selections in the second, third, fifth, and sixth rounds with an extra pick in the fifth round as part of the Zay Jones trade and a seventh-round pick as part of the Marshall Newhouse trade two years ago.

The Bills do not have their fourth round pick as that was part of the trade with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason for Stefon Diggs. They also don’t have their original selection in the seventh round which was sent to the Cleveland Browns in the Wyatt Teller trade in 2019.

In that trade, the Buffalo Bills received a fifth and sixth round pick in last year’s draft while sending Teller and seventh round pick this year to the Browns.
