It appears that the Buffalo Bills will enter the 2021 season without any major changes on their coaching staff. This didn’t appear it would be the case a few weeks ago when Brian Daboll was considered to be a favorite for the Los Angeles Chargers job and Leslie Frazier had begun interviewing for the Houston Texans’ head coaching position.
However, the Chargers elected to go with Brandon Staley as their head coach and the Texans have reportedly found their head coach by selecting David Culley, who was an assistant head coach with the Baltimore Ravens.
The Texans’ decisions seemingly came down to Frazier, who interviewed for a second time this week, and Culley. While Leslie Frazier is likely disappointed, this is a big advantage for the Buffalo Bills to have Frazier returning as defensive coordinator.
Leslie Frazier was one of the first hires by Sean McDermott when he began building his coaching staff after being named head coach of the Buffalo Bills. Prior to joining the Bills, Frazier had extensive coaching experience in the NFL, including being the head coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2011 to 2013.
Sean McDermott selected Frazier to be his, defensive coordinator a role he has remained in the past four seasons. This past offseason he was promoted to assistant head coach.
In the first year as defensive coordinator, the Bills ranked 26th in total yards allowed but then his defenses finished second and third in 2018 and 2019 respectively. This past season the Bills took a step back earlier in the season but finished the regular season strong and 14th in total yards allowed.
The Buffalo Bills are coming off their best season in over two decades and will now have the chance for continuity on their coaching staff with their head coach (McDermott), offensive coordinator (Daboll), and defensive coordinator (Frazier) all expected to return with the last head coach position filled.
