Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs: 3 key matchups to watch in AFC Championship Game
Sean McDermott vs. Andy Reid
As a steward of Andy Reid’s, Sean McDermott has overhauled the Bills’ organization since he became the head man in 2017. His defensive mind helped Buffalo rank high defensively in his first three years. With the addition of Brian Daboll in 2018 and the development of Josh Allen, matched with improved decision making and the aggressiveness to go for it on fourth-down, McDermott has become coach of the year quality.
Andy Reid is an offensive guru. He whispers to quarterbacks and it’s no surprise Patrick Mahomes is a star under Reid’s tutelage. Reid is the only coach ever to take two different franchises to three consecutive conference title games. And he’ll also roll the dice on fourth-down when his team needs a conversion.
Earlier this week, McDermott disclosed to the media via video conference that he was outcoached by Reid in their Week 6 matchup. And Reid, during a press conference noted McDermott’s accomplishments in Buffalo and said he believes the Bills’ coach deserves coach of the year honors. Both teams are relatively different since they last met in mid-October. And the coaching matchup here is primed for an extraordinary showing on Sunday.
The stakes are high. And both teams would love nothing more than to be on their way to Tampa to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LV. If the Bills plan on playing spoiler on Sunday, they’ll have to continue feeding Diggs the ball, find ways to contain Mahomes, and coach a lot better than they did the first time these two teams met earlier this season.
