Cam Newton vs. Sean McDermott

The next matchup is going to be Patriots’ quarterback Cam Newton going up against Sean McDermott and his defense. There is some history here as the first six years Cam Newton was in the NFL, he practiced every day against Sean McDermott’s defense as he was defensive coordinator during this time with the Carolina Panthers.

If there is anyone who knows Cam Newton’s game, both positives and the limitations, it would be Sean McDermott. He had an up-close look at what Newton was able to do at quarterback and should have a good idea of how to limit what he is capable of doing.

This isn’t the first time the two have faced off as the Bills played the Panthers back in 2017 in Sean McDermott’s second game as head coach of the Bills. In that game, while the Buffalo Bills did lose, the defense did a good job limiting what Newton was able to do. He finished the game with 228 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, and no touchdowns.

This experience should go a long way in helping Sean McDermott scheme a defense that slows Cam Newton in Week 8.
