The depth at safety is very inexperienced with Jaquon Johnson, who is in his second year, and Dean Marlowe, who is in his fifth, combining for less than 300 defensive snaps. The safety position is a key part of Sean McDermott’s defense and there is currently a former Pro Bowl safety who is available.

While Earl Thomas is a big name, it would make more sense for the Bills to go after a player like Eric Reid. The former first round pick has spent the past two years with the Carolina Panthers and while he didn’t play for Sean McDermott, the defense is very similar and wouldn’t require too much of a learning curve.

Even if the Bills don’t lose Micah Hyde or Jordan Poyer to injury, the coaching staff could find ways to get Reid on the field as he is a good tackler and could help at the line of scrimmage against the run. A veteran option at safety like Eric Reid could help solidify that position and provide much-needed insurance.
