The Buffalo Bills elevate Deon Lacey from the practice squad for Week 3.

Every week, the Buffalo Bills have the opportunity to elevate two players from their practice squad and after the game could return to the practice squad without clearing waivers. In the first two weeks, the Bills have elevated two players to help with injuries.

In Week 3, the Buffalo Bills elected to elevate only one from the practice squad which is linebacker Deon Lacey. This is actually the second week in a row the Bills have elevated Lacey from the practice squad. This means that if the team does bring him to the active roster in the future, he would need to go through waivers as a player can only be elevated twice in a season and return without going through waivers.

The addition of Lacey is interesting as the Bills have been hit hard by injury the past few weeks with Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano missing Week 2, but also Del’Shawn Phillips. The good news is that Edmunds and Milano were both listed as questionable for this game after Tremaine Edmunds got three limited practices in and Matt Milano was limited but was a full participant on Friday.

The absence of Phillips, who also has been ruled out for Week 3 already, makes sense for why the Bills would call up Lacey. In Week 2, Lacey was a key piece on special teams and played 20 snaps against the Dolphins. The absence of Phillips likely means that Lacey will fill that role once again.

While the addition of Lacey isn’t a direct response to potentially Edmunds or Milano missing this week, it does give the Buffalo Bills some additional depth at the position. If one of the two starters does miss this week, it likely means that Tyrel Dodson, who also has seen a lot of snaps on special teams, can once again focus on just playing defense this week.
