Is Trent Murphy’s time in Buffalo over?

With the selection of A.J. Epenesa, the highlight of the 2020 NFL Draft, returning defensive end Trent Murphy may see his time in a Bills uniform come to an end.

With rosters needing to be trimmed down to their final 53 players ahead of the September 5th deadline, it looks as if Epenesa and Hughes will be the defensive ends of choice for Buffalo.

Though, with no preseason games played for 2020 draft class, experienced in the first few weeks may be vital for the Bills, especially with the upcoming divisional games. With Murphy in the final year of his contract, it is expected that he would play to a level that is deemed deserving of being re-upped.

Last season, Murphy, to his credit, did have a respectable year with the Bills. Recording five sacks and 36 tackles on the season, he was a presence on the Bills defensive line, but two of those sacks did come in a meaningless Week 17.

That begs the question if it is more beneficial to play Murphy and get a level of play that is expected, or would it be more beneficial to the team to have Epenesa learn in real-time through regular-season reps. To most, they would choose the latter.

Furthermore, if the Bills were to go with Epenesa over Murphy, they would be saving an additional $8 million towards the cap. There is going to be plenty of intrigue heading to the final roster cutdowns next weekend.
