The Buffalo Bills on Wednesday made a change in the competition for the starting punter job.

The punting position is not one of the most exciting topics when discussing a team but a good punter can make a significant impact on the outcome of the game. The Buffalo Bills still have last year’s starter, Corey Bojorquez, but on Wednesday changed up his competition.

The team announced they had released punter/kicker Kaare Vedvik, who they signed earlier this year, and signed Lachlan Edwards. He was a seventh round pick by the New York Jets in 2016 and spent the past four seasons with the Jets and was even Vedvik’s teammate last year.

Edwards became an unrestricted free agent this offseason after the Jets elected to not bring him back at the end of his contract.

Lachlan Edwards is an experienced punter, playing in 64 games, and has more than his fair share of punts. This past season he led the NFL in punts with 87 and total punt yards with 3,991. However, his career high came in 2017 when he had 94 punts for 4,378 yards.

While he had a ton of punt yards, he also showed some accuracy with 28 punts downed inside the 20 yard line but only 3 punts that were touchbacks. This is more than half less than Bojorquez, who had seven last year, on five less punts (79).

Real competition for Corey Bojorquez

The past few seasons the Buffalo Bills have been looking for their answer at the punter position and while Bojorquez has done well, there was certainly room for improvement. The addition of Edwards is probably the stiffest competition the returning starter will face.

While Vedvik was added back in January on a reserves/futures contract, he seemed like a long shot since he was converting from being a placekicker.

The addition of Lachlan Edwards now gives the Buffalo Bills an experienced punter and certainly has a chance to be the long-term answer at the position.
