Release Trent Murphy this offseason

The idea of releasing Trent Murphy has been bounced around almost the entire offseason. The fact the Buffalo Bills could release Murphy and save over $8 million, while taking on $1.75 million in dead cap, made sense. The veteran defensive end hasn’t lived up to his free agent deal in terms of production.

However, as the summer has gone on that noise has diminished and it made sense that the team would want to keep him. They weren’t up against the cap and had plenty of room to make the necessary moves to improve this team. Also taking into account that Murphy finished the year well, the coaching staff may be willing to see how he looked in training camp before making a decision.

Now that the salary cap is expected to be closer to $175 million and considering that the $8 million could be carried over to next year, this could be a huge help for the Buffalo Bills trying to sign some of their free agents.
