Backup: Spencer Long

The primary backup along the interior is Long as he has the ability to play both guard positions and center, making him a valuable asset to the team.

With the Buffalo Bills exercising Long’s option for the 2020 season, it seems in all likelihood that he will remain with the team. If one of the other options along the interior make their presence felt, Buffalo could be tempted to trade Long, something Beane has been known for during his tenure with the team. Much like how they traded Russell Bodine last season for a sixth-round pick before final cuts.

Backup: Ryan Bates

The versatile offensive lineman was acquired in a trade from the Eagles before last season for defensive end Eli Harold. Converted to playing center after being a tackle his whole career at Penn State, Bates looks better suited for the position.

The Bills thinks highly of Bates and he ended up appearing in a game versus Tennessee at tackle, where he ended up playing 31% of the snaps due to injuries along the line. The versatility Bates provides will give him an upper hand over the other players on the inside.
