Buffalo Bills: Ceiling/Floor projections for Mario Addison in 2020
The Buffalo Bills added the veteran defensive end to help their pass rush and these are ceiling and floor projections for Mario Addison in 2020.
The defensive end position didn’t get the pass rush the Buffalo Bills would have hoped for. This position accounted for only 17 of the 44 sacks the Bills had last year, and their leading sack leader, Shaq Lawson, left in free agency.
The Bills front office went out and added veteran defensive end Mario Addison to help fill those shoes. The coaching staff knows Addison well from their time in Carolina as Sean McDermott was his defensive coordinator from 2013 to 2016 and the Bills defensive line coach, Eric Washington, was his position coach from 2013 to 2017 and then defensive coordinator in 2018 and 2019.
Addison entered the league as an undrafted free agent and bounced around the first two years in the league after spending time with the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts before joining the Carolina Panthers. He finally got a chance to start and became one of the more consistent pass rushers in the league. In the past six years, he has had at least six sacks and over the past four it jumps up to at least nine sacks.
Ceiling/Floor projections for Mario Addison in 2020
In Mario Addison first year with the Buffalo Bills, it really is going to come down to how many snaps Addison gets. Over the past three years, Addison has played at least 65% of the defensive snaps for the Panthers.
Last season, the Bills had only two players come close to that total with Jerry Hughes just over 65% and Trent Murphy finishing around 63%. If Mario Addison replaces Trent Murphy in the starting lineup, then he should finish around 60% of the snaps and he could keep his streak of nine or more sacks in a season.
If the Buffalo Bills try to evenly split snaps between their top three, with A.J. Epenesa and Darryl Johnson getting situational snaps, then Mario Addison likely produces similar numbers to Shaq Lawson, which were 32 total tackles and 6.5 sacks.
