Buffalo Bills will have tough roster decisions at WR
By Scott Bryk
The Buffalo Bills will have tough roster decisions at wide receiver after their top 3.
Stefon Diggs, John Brown and Cole Beasley surely should have the top three wide receiver positions locked up for the Buffalo Bills. Certainly, with the most unique offseason of this generation, anything can happen and most likely will.
Last season it was pretty much promised that LeSean McCoy would be returning. However, the Bills surprised most and released him prior to the seaosn. It seemed a bit of a poorly handled situation waiting so long to release him. I am certain they simply wanted to be sure no other injuries would impact the offense. They wanted to see as much as possible from the rookie, Devin Singletary. They wanted to be certain that Frank Gore would be up to the task of handling carries, especially early in the season while Singeltary was getting up to speed. It all worked out as McCoy got a ring and the Buffalo Bills found a stud who played a large role in then win playoff season.
If health cooperates and no unforeseen releases transpire, Stefon Diggs, John Brown and Cole Beasley should be one of the leagues more exciting and reliable top three receivers throughout the league.
After the top three I would think they will have between seven to nine receivers battling for the other three roster spots. One would surmise they will not keep more than the standard number of receivers since the plan seems to be getting the ball in the tight ends hands as well as the young studs at running back.
Duke Williams, Ray-Ray McCloud, Gabriel Davis, Isaiah Hodgins, Nick Easley, Andre Roberts, Isaiah McKenzie, and Robert Foster appear to be the competition to fill spots four through six. With COVID-19 impacting everything everywhere, who knows if rosters will be increased in size to accommodate the need to replace players who need to miss any time.
Maybe the size and policies of the practice squad will be adjusted to have the needed reserves. Roster profusion will be key this season more so than usual. This is not a sport like hockey or baseball that has affiliated farm teams to purge players from to fill voids.
Signing free agents off the street requires too much time and preparation when an urgent need already exists. All the teams need to be ready for anything the league or virus throws at them. There is no question this is going to be one of the toughest decisions for the Buffalo Bills front office and coaching staff leading up to the season.
