Sacks

The two players who finished with the most sacks for the Buffalo Bills last year, Jordan Phillips and Shaq Lawson, are both gone and the race for sack leader is wide open. The Bills added A.J. Epenesa and Mario Addison this offseason at defensive end but also brought in Quinton Jefferson and Vernon Butler.

These four players will be competing with veteran Jerry Hughes and former first round pick Ed Oliver for the title of sack leader in 2020. It really wouldn’t be surprising if any of these players ended up leading the team but in a year with limited offseason and preseason games, experience could be enough to push one player ahead of the competition.

It would certainly be nice to see a player Ed Oliver take the title, especially since he finished with five sacks last year after a slow start and should see increased reps with Phillips no longer with the franchise. However, the Bills defensive tackle is facing a possible suspension and any games missed could set him back.

The one player that likely will lead the team in sacks is Mario Addison. While he will be turning 33 years of age this season, he has been a consistent force getting to the quarterback with nine or more sacks the past four years. He is stepping into a defense he is familiar with as he played for Sean McDermott when he was defensive coordinator for the Panthers.

It is hard to bet against Mario Addison entering 2020, especially with some of the other factors in play.
