Injury concerns for Cam Newton

At one time in his career, Cam Newton was one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL. He was able to beat teams through the air but it was his ability to scramble and make plays with his legs that made him so dynamic.

It is amazing to think about the fact that in Cam Newton’s MVP season in 2015 his top wide receivers were Ted Ginn Jr., Jerricho Cotchery and Philly Brown. While he did have Greg Olsen, there was no question that Newton’s play elevate that offense and he made everyone around him better.

However, since that 2015 season Cam Newton has dealt with his fair share of injuries and he has struggled to regain that level of play. In that time frame, he has had two shoulder injuries and most recently a foot injury that forced him to miss 14 games last year.

The lingering effects of the foot injury is probably the biggest concern because it so critical to what Newton can do. It obviously affects his ability to scramble but it will also impact his ability to plant and drive the football.

For the New England Patriots, they should be prepared to have a few games with Jarrett Stidham under center. Those few games could be the deciding factor in what expects to be a close division race.
