The Buffalo Bills quarterbacks were recently ranked 28th in the NFL by the Boston Globe.

There is no question that the opinions of Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen is probably the widest ranging of any player in the NFL. For every article that mentions Josh Allen as a dark-horse MVP, like the one by Adam Schein at NFL.com, there is rankings like the one by Ben Volin at the Boston Globe.

Volin’s rankings looked at the each NFL team’s quarterback position, taking into account starters and backups, and had the Bills ranked 28th in the league.

"28. Bills: Josh Allen, Matt Barkley, Jake Fromm — Allen deserves credit for leading the Bills to a 10-6 record last year. But he has been brutal as a pocket passer, and the Bills won in spite of him. They could use an upgrade at backup, too."

It remains to be seen where Allen falls but while it seems unlikely that he would win the MVP award in 2020, there is no question that this quarterback group should be higher than 28th in the league.

As Volin notes, the Bills won 10 games last year with Allen under center and he accounted for 29 touchdowns (20 passing, nine rushing) to nine interceptions. He showed significant improvement in protecting the ball as the season went on and over the final 11 games he threw 15 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

There is no question that Allen has room to improve as a pocket passer and if that is the only measure then he should be ranked near the bottom of the league. However, this ignores a substantial part of his game that makes him dynamic, which is his ability to make plays with his feet.

He also does an exceptional job when the game is on the line to put this offense in position to win the game. This past season, Allen had five game-winning drives which was tied for the league lead with Russell Wilson and DeShaun Watson, who Volin ranked third and sixth respectively.

It is clear that the opinions of Josh Allen are going to widely vary and the Buffalo Bills quarterback is going to be front and center this year with four primetime games. If he has strong performances, these types of rankings will likely be a thing of the past.
