Is Buffalo Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds being overlooked?

This is the time of the year where media outlets put out their lists previewing the 2020 season and one of the popular lists is Top Players under 25. Surprisingly, the Buffalo Bills are struggling to find their way onto these lists, especially with a player like Tremaine Edmunds.

There has recently been three publications that has put out players under 25 lists with slightly different variations but one thing has been constant and that is linebacker Tremaine Edmunds has been left off.

Sean Wagner-McGough at CBS Sports put together a Top 25 under 25 years old as a ranking of the 25 best players, regardless of position, and who were 25 years old of the time of the article (which was May 21st). Meanwhile, Pro Football Focus took a similar approach but made the cut off Week 1 of the 2020 season for players having to be under 25.

Marc Sessler of NFL.com put together his list but built out a team of the best players under 25 years old at the start of the 2020 season.

However, no matter the format, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is left off the list.

Why should Tremaine Edmunds be on these lists?

There is no question that Tremaine Edmunds is one of the better young linebackers in the league. The Bills selected Edmunds 16th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and he stepped into a starting role almost immediately.

Over the past two seasons, he has played over 90% of the team’s defensive snaps and is the “quarterback” of the defense with the green dot, meaning he gets the play call from the sideline. He has quickly become the leader of one of the top defenses in the league.

In terms of production, Edmunds has 236 total tackles over the past two seasons which is the 13th highest among linebackers. However, when looking at linebackers who are 25 years of age or younger, he is first if using Week 1 of the 2020 season as a cutoff.

In addition to all the stats he has accumulated, the fact that he has earned a leadership role within the franchise, he also made his first Pro Bowl last year. He has accomplished all this at only 22 years of age.

Whether Tremaine Edmunds makes these lists or not, don’t necessarily mean much in terms of production on the field. There is no question that the Buffalo Bills drafted an excellent linebacker who has accomplished a great deal in two years and has high expectations entering 2020.
