Buffalo Bills: Offseason moves puts pressure on Brian Daboll

The Buffalo Bills front office was busy this offseason adding dynamic weapons on the offensive side of the ball. While Josh Allen will be under a microscope, offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will also be under pressure to perform.

The Buffalo Bills brought in a lot of talent this offseason, especially on the offensive side of the ball. General manager Brandon Beane made a big splash with the trade for wide receiver Stefon Diggs but also added dynamic playmakers like Zack Moss, Gabriel Davis and Isaiah Hodgins in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The talk since these moves has been about Josh Allen and whether or not he can take that next step in his development. Rightfully so as he was a Top 10 pick by the Bills in 2018 and will be entering his third year in the league. He has shown flashes of being a franchise quarterback and played very well down the stretch last year. However, he still has some work to do on his accuracy and decision making that hopefully continues to improve.

While the quarterback is unquestionably the most important position, there is a strong case to be made that offensive coordinator Brian Daboll could be under more pressure than Josh Allen entering this year.

Similar to Josh Allen, Daboll is going to enter his third year with the Bills after two years as offensive coordinator for Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.

The good news for Daboll is that this offense improved from his first year as coordinator to his second in almost every category from total yards, passing yards, rushing yards and scoring per game. However, the Bills started so low as they were 30th in total yards, 31st in passing and 30th in scoring in 2018 it was hard to go lower.

This past season they did improve as mentioned but only moved up to 24th in total yards, 26th in passing and 23rd in scoring. The rushing attack has always been near the top of the league as they were ninth in 2018 and eighth this past year, which is partially due to Josh Allen and his ability to scramble.

There was certainly some excuses built in for the lackluster performance over the past two years starting with an abysmal supporting cast in 2018 for a rookie quarterback who was far from polished entering the NFL. This past season, the Bills had a number of new starters they were trying to incorporate along the offensive line as well new weapons like John Brown and Cole Beasley.

This year though a majority of the starting lineup has returned, including all five along the offensive line as well as weapons like Brown, Beasley, Devin Singletary and Dawson Knox. The pieces are in place and that also means the excuses are now gone for Brian Daboll.

The Buffalo Bills front office did their part getting the offensive firepower and the pressure is now on Brian Daboll to make sure that all these players are utilized correctly and this offense is firing on all cylinders in 2020.
