Extend key starters past 2020

The Bills front office already extended one of their key starters who was going to be a free agent after this season with a new deal for safety Jordan Poyer. However, there are three more players that the team should try to work out extensions with.

All three players came from Sean McDermott’s first draft as head coach with the Bills and that is left tackle Dion Dawkins, linebacker Matt Milano and cornerback Tre’Davious White. That is the order the team should work on extensions for.

The good news for Dawkins and Milano is that Brandon Beane already has said they have begun having preliminary talks and with both players having the same agent, it makes it a little easier. It would certainly be beneficial for the Bills to get a deal done now than let them go through the season and want to test the free agent waters next year.

While, Tre’Davious White is probably the most important of this group to get a new deal done with, he is probably the one that generates the least amount of urgency. Fortunately for the Bills, the team was able to elect to use the fifth-year option which keeps White under contract through 2021.

This is not to say the team shouldn’t try to work out a deal but they do also have next offseason to work something out, which would be a year away from his first opportunity at free agency.
