2017: The Playoff Drought is over

One awful side effect of the Buffalo Bills struggles from 2000 on was to hear every year about the playoff drought. The Bills had the dubious honor of hearing every year about their franchise’s inability to make the playoffs.

However, that all changed in 2017 as the Buffalo Bills returned to the postseason for the first time sneaking in with the final Wild Card Spot. The way they got there was certainly improbable and was not expected in Sean McDermott’s first year as head coach.

The team had begun cutting salary in hopes of freeing up cap space in the future, and were trying to find long term answers to positions resulting in things like Nathan Peterman starting multiple games.

However, heading into the final week of the season they were still in contention and needed a win over the Miami Dolphins and then some help. They were able to get the win over the Dolphins, thanks in part to a Kyle Williams rushing touchdown, and it came down to the Cincinnati Bengals beating the Baltimore Ravens.

The chances didn’t look great but in the final minute Andy Dalton found Tyler Boyd for a 49-yard touchdown on a 4th and 12 play to take the lead, and eventually secure the win. This one play knocked the Ravens out and punched the Bills ticket to the playoffs.

If these moments were ranked, this is by far the best moment for the Buffalo Bills over the past five years, and probably longer.
