The Buffalo Bills should try to sign recently released Damon Harrison as a key depth piece at defensive tackle.

There is plenty of questions entering this offseason and into the 2020 season around the defensive tackle position for the Buffalo Bills. The biggest question is what they do with Jordan Phillips, who had a breakout season last year but is a free agent. This leaves the front office with three options: re-sign him, franchise tag him or let him walk.

However, he isn’t the only question the Buffalo Bills have and depth could be an issue at the position. The Bills should be getting Harrison Phillips back this year after he suffered a torn ACL early last season. Phillips was playing at a high level before the injury and the hope is that he can return to that form after the injury.

The Buffalo Bills will also need to decide if they want to bring back Corey Liuget, who the team signed midway through the season. A former first round pick did exactly what the Bills needed as a backup run stopper that can fill in for Star Lotulelei if needed.

While the Bills may elect to bring Liuget back, adding a player like Damon Harrison could be the better move. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions are expected to release the former first-team All-Pro and Harrison not only would be a depth signing but could push Lotulelei for the starting job.

Harrison entered the league in 2012 as an undrafted free agent after signing with the New York Jets. He spent four seasons with them before signing with the New York Giants in 2016. However, the Giants traded Harrison in 2018 to the Detroit Lions, who signed him to a one-year contract extension last offseason that would have kept him with the Lions through 2020.

The Buffalo Bills will need to address some of the questions mentioned earlier but if the Bills are looking for more depth at the position and don’t elect to bring Corey Liuget back, then a player like Damon Harrison makes sense for this defense.
