While the Buffalo Bills head coach and general manager have two years left on their current deals, the Pegulas should not wait to try and work out contract extensions for both.
The 2019 season ended on a down note for the Buffalo Bills, as they fell to the Houston Texans in overtime of the AFC Wild Card game. While the Bills didn’t go far in the playoffs, there is no question that the future is bright for this organization and there is a foundation here for something special.
It starts at the top with general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott. This is why, the Pegulas should not wait and should begin working out long term deals with both this offseason.
Sean McDermott joined the Bills after the team fired Rex Ryan in 2017. He was almost the complete opposite of Ryan in terms of personality and was not a hire that came with alot of fanfare. There was certainly some skepticism as he had no head coaching experience but did have five years as defensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers.

While they had their head coach, the Bills elected to keep Doug Whaley as general manager through the NFL Draft in April. However, shortly after the draft the team went back to Charlotte and found their general manager in Brandon Beane.
The Pegulas signed both Beane and McDermott to five-year deals in 2017, signaling this was going to be a partnership between these two.
The results have only been positive from both over the first three years of the deal. McDermott has led the Bills to two playoff berths in his first three years and an overall record of 25-23.
As for Beane, he was able to quickly overhaul the salary cap, eating a lot of dead cap with a number of cuts heading into the 2018 season. However, the tough times then have led to nearly $90 million dollars in cap space this offseason.
More impressive than the financials, has been the way he has navigated the NFL Draft the past two years. He has made 16 draft picks and this past year eight played significant snaps led by Josh Allen, Tremaine Edmunds, Devin Singletary and Ed Oliver.
The Bills will be entering this upcoming draft with another nine picks thanks to Beane’s ability to get value through trades.
The results Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane have produced in only three seasons is rather remarkable. This is why the Buffalo Bills can’t wait until after this season and must make a statement this offseason they are committed to both with contract extensions.
There is no question that if either get close to the end of their contract, there will be a number of teams lining up hoping for a chance to lure them away from Buffalo.
The offseason is typically focused on the players and how the Bills can improve the talent on the field. However, if the Buffalo Bills are going to have sustained success, they need to establish who will be leading this organization for the foreseeable future.
