Tight End

Dawson Knox

The third round rookie finished with 28 receptions, 388 receiving yards and two touchdowns which was a promising first year in the league. The former Ole Miss tight end was overshadowed in college and didn’t get much opportunity to show what he was capable of.

Entering his second season, there is reason to believe that his role could grow in this offense as he is very athletic for a tight end. He could bring another dynamic to this offense that helps open up this offense and creates space for other playmakers.

Grade: C+

Tyler Kroft

The Bills key free agent addition at the position was Tyler Kroft. However, the former Cincinnati Bengal had a slow start due to a broken foot suffered during OTAs. He was forced to miss the start of the year and finished with only six receptions for 71 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The foot injury opened the door for Knox, and to a lesser extent Tommy Sweeney, and Kroft never really got to establish himself in this offense. It will be interesting this offseason to see if Kroft returns to the Bills and how he might fit alongside Knox.

Grade: C-

Lee Smith

The third tight end who saw significant playing time was Lee Smith. However, the veteran tight end was primarily used as an extra blocker along the offensive line. By understanding this is his role in the offense, and realizing he is not asked to contribute much in the passing game, it is hard not to give him a good grade.
