Who is the starting tight end?

The Buffalo Bills initial 53-man roster included five tight ends with the team keeping rookies Tommy Sweeney and Dawson Knox, last year’s starter Jason Croom, blocking specialist Lee Smith and free agent signing Tyler Kroft.

This was certainly surprising but the team quickly got down to four when they placed Jason Croom on injured reserve. However, Tyler Kroft is recovering from a broken foot and did not participate in any training camp practice or preseason game. If he is not able to go, this leaves the Bills with only three healthy tight ends for their game against the Jets.

While Lee Smith has the most experience, he really is only on the roster for his blocking ability and is not much of a threat in the passing game. The concern for the Bills is that they enter Week 1 with two rookies at a position they were hoping to upgrade this offseason.

This is not to say that Sweeney or Knox are not capable of doing the job but it is a gamble relying on two rookies at a key position in their passing game.
