Report: Buffalo Bills miss out on Britton Colquitt
The Buffalo Bills thought they had addressed their punting situation before Britton Colquitt changed his mind, according to a report.
Prior to the final preseason game, the Buffalo Bills released Cory Carter which left the team with Corey Bojorquez as the only punter on the roster. However, Bojorquez has not impressed this preseason but did make the 53-man roster. This led to speculation that the Bills would be looking at players cut as potential alternatives.
One of those players was Britton Colquitt, who at 34 years of age was entering his 10th year in the league, and was a surprise cut by the Cleveland Browns. In nine seasons, he played six with the Denver Broncos and the past three with the Browns. For his career he has 718 punts, averaging 45.3 yards per punt, with only three career blocks. However, all three blocks came during his time with Cleveland.
However, according to Andrew Krammer and Ben Goessling of the Star-Tribune, Colquitt was set to join the Bills before deciding to join Gary Kubiak in Minnesota. Colquitt and Kubiak were together in Denver in 2015 and 2016 when Kubiak was the head coach.
"Colquitt, 34, spent the past three years in Cleveland and punted for six years in Denver, where he won a Super Bowl with the Broncos in 2015. That team was coached by Gary Kubiak, the Vikings’ new assistant head coach. Sources say Colquitt was on his way to sign with the Bills before he was convinced to reunite with Kubiak in Minnesota."
There is no question that he would have been an excellent addition to the Bills and an upgrade over their current starter. The experience he has could provide stability at the position that is currently not there.
The Buffalo Bills front office must go back to the drawing board. However, the report that they were expecting to bring Colquitt in confirms that they are looking at other alternatives.
The team will likely bring players in for a workout before the team’s first regular season game against the New York Jets.
