The Buffalo Bills have had more than their fair share of injuries at tight end but it appears they are heading in the right direction.
The Buffalo Bills were hit hard by injuries at the tight end position this summer. It started all the way back in OTAs when they saw free agent signing Tyler Kroft go down with a broken foot. Then during the early part of training camp, Jason Croom and Dawson Knox suffered hamstring injuries that have kept them out since then.
On Sunday, head coach Sean McDermott provided an update on all the injured tight ends and the news was positive. He said that Kroft has been making progress and worked a lot behind the scenes. However, he did not provide a timeline of when Kroft would be available to practice.
The former Cincinnati Bengal had a breakout season in 2017 when he had 42 receptions for 404 yards and seven touchdowns. However, injuries have started to become an issue as he only played in five games last year due to a broken foot, the same foot he broke during OTAs.
As for Jason Croom and Dawson Knox, McDermott did say both players would be at practice and they will take a closer look today and tomorrow. While he didn’t have more details it was certainly good to hear they are making progress and will be able to participate some in practice.
The coaching staff have the tough task of evaluating this position as they begin to think about the 53-man roster due to the number of injuries. While the team has had to deal with a number of injuries, it created an opportunity for Tommy Sweeney. The seventh round draft pick has really taken advantage of this increased playing time and looked good against the Carolina Panthers.
The Buffalo Bills have two preseason games remaining and hopefully will be able to get at least Jason Croom and Dawson Knox back in time for Friday night against the Detroit Lions.
