Jerry Hughes has enjoyed success playing for the Buffalo Bills getting to the quarterback, but which has he gotten to the most over the years?
Since 2013, Jerry Hughes — a once disappointing first-round pick with the Indianapolis Colts in 2010 — has been a constant for the Buffalo Bills. In his first two years wearing Buffalo red and blue, he was able to tally double-digit sacks each season and has totaled 42 as a Bill. But, who has he sacked the most?
According to Pro Football Reference, including playoffs, the defensive end has sacked former Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill the most as a Bill, with five.
That statistic shouldn’t be too surprising. The Bills and Dolphins play in the same division and face each other twice a season on an annual basis. Miami, in the past six years, has struggled to protect their quarterbacks, and Tannehill — when he played — didn’t help. The former Texas A&M quarterback is known for possessing inconsistent footwork in the pocket and lack of confidence under pressure.
Hughes’ last sack of 2018 came on Tannehill during their week 17 bout, when he pinned him for a loss of nine yards. Before then, the pass-rusher hadn’t sacked the signal-caller since 2015; when he tallied two in one game. Coincidentally, his last sack in 2013 and first in 2014 came by way of the same quarterback. Now Tannehill is on the Tennessee Titans.
After Tannehill, the quarterback Hughes has sacked the most is Tom Brady, with four. However, he hasn’t done so since 2017. From 2014 to 2017, he recorded a takedown on the New England Patriots quarterback in each season. Again, this shouldn’t be surprising; as division rivals, the Bills and Patriots face each other twice a year.
As for 2018 alone, Hughes found the most success against the poor Houston Texans offensive line, as he sacked their Deshaun Watson once and shared another with Trent Murphy.
