Flex
FLEX1: Travis Henry – 2002
Fantasy points: 248
If it weren’t for some historically great running backs, Travis Henry‘s 2002 season would be a starter at the running back position. Luckily, the flex position exists, paving the way for the best remaining season by a back, receiver, or tight end to start. It turns out, Henry’s second season as a pro was a natural choice.
A power back out of Tennessee, Henry dominated the NFL as a sophomore. Rushing for 1,438 yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding 309 receiving yards, Henry earned his first and only Pro-Bowl nod in 2002. As it currently stands, that rushing touchdown amount ranks second all-time for Bills backs in a season.
FLEX2 (bench): C.J. Spiller – 2012
Fantasy points: 212
Despite deserving seasons from Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, Willis McGahee, and others, C.J. Spiller‘s 2012 campaign ranks as the best bench flex option. Like his surprising appearance on this list, Spiller broke onto the scene in 2012; the best season of the former first-round pick’s career.
For the season, Spiller tallied 1,703 scrimmage yards and eight touchdowns, despite only starting nine games. He showed the promise of a bell-cow back, rushing for 1,244 yards and six touchdowns. The elusive back made an impact as a receiver too. He added 459 yards and a pair of touchdowns as a receiver. Unfortunately, he never reached marks close to 2012 again; nonetheless, the season is deserving of a bench spot.
