Former NFL running back Maurice Jones-Drew called the Buffalo Bills’ backfield of LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore a dynamic duo. He may be right.

On yesterday’s (June 7th) edition of NFL Total Access, former All-Pro Maurice Jones-Drew and Hall of Famer Terrell Davis recognized the best backfield duos in the league. Cleveland’s duo of Nick Chubb/Kareem Hunt and New England’s pairing of Sony Michel/James White were Davis’ picks. Jones-Drew went with the Buffalo Bills for his first selection, specifically LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore.

When analyzing the pairing, Jones-Drew said the below;

"I got to give you an oldie but goodie. Shoutout to my guy LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore. –Shady here [when reviewing tape] give me the cut on the dime, he can break it open, that’s what you’re looking for — he still has the speed to do it. — Frank is going to be that unconvential truth. He’s going to get you [the Bills] yards."

As for Davis, he agreed with the choice but claimed that there was some ‘nostalgia’ bias in Jones-Drew’s decision. The rebuttal by MJD; they all trained together in Miami — so there’s probably some truth to that bias.

However, Jones-Drew isn’t an extremist for listing the older pair of McCoy (30) and Gore (36) as a dynamic duo. In their combined 24 seasons of play, the two have totaled 11 Pro-Bowl appearances, 152 rushing touchdowns, and 25,345 yards. That last statistic is by-far the highest between a pair of running backs in NFL history.

Gore is likely on his way to the Hall of Fame; if McCoy rebounds from a bad 2018, he could eventually follow suit. However, many would disagree with Jones-Drew’s recognition of the duo. Why? McCoy perhaps lost a step in the 2017 off-season, Gore has never played with the Bills, and their age plus one-year contracts means it won’t last long.

Yet, dubbing them as a dynamic duo is entirely just. Despite his elder statesmen status, Gore has managed to find success no matter the situation — he rushed for 722 yards on a 4.6 YPC average in a committee on a mediocre Miami squad last year. As for McCoy, let’s not forget that he played behind a lousy line last year, suffered injuries, and is just a season removed from a five-time Pro-Bowl streak.

If history tells us anything, Gore and McCoy should find a way to produce. While the two may not be what they used to be, it’s hard to discount two Hall of Fame talents in the same backfield. With the two now running behind a much improved offensive line, there is a chance that Shady and Frank the Tank could prove to be dynamic in 2019.

What are your thoughts? Could the Bills have a dynamic run-game next year led by McCoy and Gore? Or will it be Devin Singletary and T.J. Yeldon breaking out?
