An early 2020 mock draft shows the Buffalo Bills picking rather high and addressing a need on offense. There are several takeaways from the pick.

The year 2020 doesn’t even seem like a real thing to me.

2020? Is this a sci-fi movie?

Anyway, the year is indeed coming up and will also feature another NFL Draft. And according to a recent CBS Sports mock draft, the Buffalo Bills will be picking early.

It is only May 2019 but Will Brinson of CBS Sports decided to get his mock drafting on for 2020. He has the Bills picking No. 4 overall and taking Laviska Shenault Jr., wide receiver out of Colorado.

I have a few thoughts from this.

The first is that No. 4 overall seems a bit high. Are the Bills going to be that bad again? I sure hope not. I would argue the team could be a dark horse contender to earn a Wild Card spot. Clearly others out there think the Bills are destined for another double-digit loss season. Yet as always, the Bills will have to earn national respect. Nothing new here.

My next thought is that taking a receiver at No. 4 means the Bills don’t see any major success from any of the receivers on the roster this year. Taking a receiver that high would show that the team is desperate for help at the position.

Unless Shenault Jr. was an absolute superstar this year, it would be a bold move. Then again, receiver would be one of the only positions the team would realistically need to target in the first round if all the new additions play well in 2019. The only other potential position to target would be running back and teams can do that later on in the draft.

Brinson’s pick is of course a guess and he is just going off his board as it stands right now. Things will obviously change and it will be interesting to see how the college season goes in terms of players standing out as top prospects.

Next. Way-too-early 2019 offensive line predictions. dark

But I sure hope the Bills don’t have to look at the top prospects in 2020. That would mean another rough season ahead and no one wants that.
