After crushing the first two rounds, the Buffalo Bills took a running back. This was not a position of need, but he could be the running back of the future.
I believe wide receiver (Hakeem Butler/Miles Boykin) or tight end (Jace Sternberger) should have been prioritized before taking a running back. With the run on running backs starting in the third round, the Buffalo Bills opted to go and take their guy at No. 74 overall.
The Bills backfield is getting crowded. Having signed Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon, along with a returning LeSean McCoy, will make this an intriguing battle to watch throughout the season.
Prospect Analysis
There is no running back in this class that is going to come in and make an impact like Saquon Barkley. I just want to make everyone aware of that.
Devin Singletary has elite vision and balance. When watching his film, I found 5-10 runs where he escaped nearly impossible situations. Defenders had him dead to rights and he made them look silly. His ability to dip and juke to evade tacklers will not be matched by anyone in this class.
All that being said, he has taken tons of hits and carried the ball over 700 times over his collegiate career. An undersized guy that relies on improvisation isn’t the typical recipe for NFL success, but I wouldn’t count him out.
Projection
This pick is easily the most controversial so far. The current running back depth chart is just too convoluted. His running style will get him some work early and his play in the preseason will dictate the amount of touches he gets going forward.
He is a younger version of McCoy, so this could signal the end of the Shady era. If that does come to fruition, he will be a fun offensive weapon to watch.
