The Buffalo Bills pick early enough to where the concept of reaching for a player can be brought up. One writer says the team should ignore any such claims.
The Buffalo Bills are in a perfect position to catch a desperate team and trade out of the No. 9 overall pick.
Then again, there is some great value at that pick that could give the Bills a franchise player somewhere on the field.
NFL.com’s Adam Rank recently ran a mock draft where he said what each NFL team should do in the first round, as opposed to a prediction of what will actually happen. He thinks the Bills should go after wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and ignore any talk of reaching for the big pass-catcher.
From the article:
"But I feel it’s essential that you guys continue to stockpile offensive talent. Now, it might be a reach to go with Metcalf this high in the draft, but if you’re still locked into this spot and can’t convince a QB-needy team to move up, I say you say, “excuse my reach” and just make this pick."
I agree with the mindset that teams shouldn’t worry about claims of reaching for a player. There are so many instances of great players being passed on by teams that take players who end up being busts. If the Bills think Metcalf can be a top receiver in Buffalo, they shouldn’t get hesitant at No. 9.
In my opinion, what the Bills should do is look to trade down a few spots with a team that is desperate to grab a quarterback. Brandon Beane could get a 2020 first-round pick with a team that may struggle this year, ensuring the Bills could add another top player next year even if the team has a winning record in 2019.
This type of offer is obviously out of Beane’s hands, as another team must get antsy enough to make such a trade. But if the calls come in and the result is dropping down only three or four spots, it seems like the right move to make.
Everyone knows everything and nothing at the same time when it comes to the NFL Draft. The best us fans can do is hope that Beane makes the right decision. Easy enough.
