The Buffalo Bills have had a busy start to the week by adding a great deal of help on offense, along with a former first-round pick on defense.
The Buffalo Bills have agreed to deals with several players this week, and those deals can become official this afternoon when the new league year begins.
Most of the moves have come on offense, but the Bills did add a defender in cornerback Kevin Johnson.
The former first-round pick spent four years with the Houston Texans, but injuries have led to him only playing in 35 games in that span.
We’ve signed CB Kevin Johnson to a one-year deal. #GoBills

He will look to resurrect his career in Buffalo so it was a smart, low-risk move for Brandon Beane. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not like the team made a major investment in Johnson the way the Texans did.
Then there are all the moves on offense. The two most notable come at wide receiver, as the Bills added both Cole Beasley and John Brown in multi-year deals.
Cole Beasley’s 4 year, $29M contract is a strongly front-loaded deal. In terms of cap structure, it can be 1 year $11.4M if needed, but 2 years, $17M is more likely.

John Brown’s 3 year $27M contract w/ the #Bills is essentially a 1 year, $10.7M deal with options for 2020 & 2021. He gets $10.1M guaranteed at signing.

As explained in the tweets above from Spotrac, these deals are not major hits on the cap. In fact, they can be moved on from if things don’t go well. But they look good in the present as Josh Allen gets two reliable targets on the outside after relying on young talent throughout last season.
Signing two starting-caliber receivers is nice, but the Bills still need someone with some size on the outside. The free agent class wasn’t the best this year, so the team will likely look toward the draft to add at least one receiver to the competition for playing time.
Signing skill players always results in more newsworthy content. However, the most important moves for the Bills come in the addition of several new offensive linemen.
It started earlier this offseason with Spencer Long. That was only the beginning as the Bills gave center Mitch Morse a record deal to come over from Kansas City.
Mitch Morse’s 4 year $44.5M contract w/ the #Bills is at least a 2 year $28.375M deal in terms of structure. It includes $20M fully guaranteed at signing. Big money and a strong signing for Buffalo.

After that came the additions of tackle Ty Nsekhe and guard Jon Feliciano.
It’s clear Bills aren’t messing around f with their O-line rebuild. With Bills signing guard Jon Feliciano, per @mortreport, they now have signed four offensive linemen this offseason. Russell Bodine’s starting job has already evaporated and Wyatt Teller’s could be in jeopardy.

This was expected to happen and all these moves come before the NFL Draft even gets underway. If the Bills do stay at No. 9 overall, they could add a top offensive line prospect to the mix, completing the overhaul of the line in a matter of two months.
The Bills also added a new tight end in Tyler Kroft, who comes over from Cincinnati. His career numbers aren’t much to get excited about as his best receiving season came in 2017 when he had 404 yards and seven touchdowns.
Yet if he comes in as one of several new tight ends, this will be a great depth signing. At the same time he could see more action in this offense with a quarterback like Allen. Things aren’t exactly booming with the Bengals.
The final move to discuss is the addition of Frank Gore. Are the Bills trying to get as old as possible?
That question was asked when the move was announced. Fans must try to remember that he is coming on a cheap one-year deal at the start of the offseason. I highly doubt the Bills enter the year with Gore, Chris Ivory, and LeSean McCoy as the three backs on the roster. That would not be wise or even make sense given Beane’s process.
Gore can provide 8-10 carries per game and be a reliable veteran on offense. Perhaps this means McCoy will be let go?
The moves should continue to happen especially that the league year officially begins today, so we will be on the lookout.
For now, it is time to get to know the many new faces that will be showing up in Buffalo this year.
