The Buffalo Bills made an early free-agent signing one year ago that looked promising at the time. It turned out to be a disaster.

Buffalo Bills fans had an actual signing to talk about on this day one year ago.

It was February 27, 2018 and the Bills had a made a move the night before by signing Vontae Davis.

The experienced defender was set to join the Bills and be a starter for the entire season. He was getting $5 million so it was expected he would be playing at a high level.

Instead, he retired during halftime of the second game of the season.

It was a fun signing at the time because Davis visited several teams, but ultimately decided to join the Bills. Yet it would have been better for Buffalo if he chose somewhere else.

I remember this story standing out because Davis was able to sign before free agency began after being let go by the Indianapolis Colts during the season. It was an early victory for Brandon Beane and seemed to be the first of many moves to come.

No one could have predicted Davis retiring when he did. However, it could lead to Beane being more cautious about adding veterans who have dealt with injury issues. Davis was let go by the Colts after being injured and it clearly had an effect on him going forward.

Davis was never meant to be a long-term fix for the Bills in the secondary. But it is hard to look back and see just how wrong the signing went after being received well at the time.

dark. Next. 5 wide receivers to consider in free agency

The good news is that no other signings went as poorly as this one did. That is, no one else retired during a game.
