Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is up for a weekly award honoring rookie players after his solid performance against the Miami Dolphins.
The Buffalo Bills didn’t come away with a victory on Sunday, but Josh Allen had perhaps the best performance of his young career.
He threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns, and added 135 yards on the ground. That performance has him up for Rookie of the Week honors for Week 13.
His competition includes Phillip Lindsay, Dante Pettis, Saquon Barkley and Derwin James.
The award has been dominated by Cleveland Browns rookies all year, so it is nice to see some variety in the candidates this week. All the players are worthy of winning, but Allen may get a boost due to being a quarterback and having several highlight plays.
Fans can vote for this award, and Bills fans are known to be quite the supportive bunch.
I think Allen deserves the honor, and that is not a biased view. Not only was he right there in rushing yards with Barkley and Lindsay, but he also had the added success through the air. Pettis had a solid game but his team got smoked, while James did well but not anything notable enough to stand out as the top rookie of the week.
Allen being nominated for the honor doesn’t change much about the season, yet it shows Bills fans that his success is being recognized around the league. Right now, it appears that Allen and Baker Mayfield are the top two rookie quarterbacks from the 2018 class.
It is still early in his career and there are four games remaining this season, but being nominated for this weekly award should serve as a nice stepping stone for Allen as his next task is to lead his team to another victory. And maybe throw for 300 yards in a game.
