Buffalo Bills: Starting quarterback job remains up in the air
The Buffalo Bills may only have two quarterbacks competing for the starting job now but that doesn’t mean there is any more clarity on the situation.
Nathan Peterman began the preseason as the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills.
AJ McCarron was next up in line as the starter. Does that mean Josh Allen will start the third game?
It is hard to gauge the feelings of Sean McDermott because he keeps a regular rotation of the quarterbacks. And now that McCarron is out with an injury, the rotation is down to two.
And for all the preseason talk of Josh Allen being on a set plan, it doesn’t look like he is out of the running for the starting job.
I understand the concept of a rotation, as McDermott puts it. But this rotation wouldn’t exist if one player clearly stood out as the starter. It only helps to have one player nailed down to lead the offense as early as possible. Right now, the eventual starting quarterback is not getting full-time work with the first-team offense in the preseason.
What this tells me is that Allen is strongly being considered as the starter. If he wasn’t, he could just get reps with the second-team offense and settle in as the backup to Peterman for now.
We all know that Allen is the hopeful quarterback of the future. But for those who thought the team would take it slow, he may be outplaying his competition and forcing the coaches to start him. That doesn’t necessarily mean he is ready, but if he gives the team the best chance to win he will be out there.
It would just be nice for someone to take hold of the job. Since the third preseason game is the one where the starters play the most, whoever starts Sunday against the Bengals will likely be the starter come Week 1.
