Buffalo Bills: These next six games are not about a quarterback controversy

What is this really about?

This season has been a lot of fun and even interesting thus far. Granted the Bills look like they are probably in the middle of a five-game losing streak. Everyone is jumping on head coach Sean McDermott for starting QB Nathan Peterman over incumbent starter, Tyrod Taylor.

I theorize that this entire ordeal is about whether or not current offensive coordinator Rick Dennison can develop a young rookie quarterback. Currently, McDermott and the Bills are using Peterman as the subject of this experiment. If Dennison can convince he can indeed develop a young, rookie quarterback. Perhaps that will make the following bit of news, moot.

Especially with the news that came out of Denver, as of Monday, November 20, 2017. The Broncos have just fired Mike McCoy, who was their OC, up until last week, for Broncos’ first-year head coach Vance Johnson, respectively. McCoy let me remind you was rumored to have been McDermott’s first or second choice before he settled on Rick Dennison to serve as his OC during his first year in Buffalo.

Yes, I believe Dennison is coaching these last six games to keep his job as OC with the Bills. He has but one question to answer. It is, can he show McDermott he has the ability to develop Peterman from his first start to his last over these next six games.

Who will McDermott start at QB against the Kansas City Chiefs?

We all will see tomorrow perhaps whether or not my theory holds water or not. Perhaps it would be a great idea to continue to start Peterman going forward.

Because what I fear and I am fairly sure there are at some other Bills’ fans who would agree with the following. Some fans are afraid that McDermott and Beane will not draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. Then tell the fan base they believe in building around their fifth-round pick QB from 2017.

At that point, I believe the overwhelming majority of the Bills fan base will lose their minds over such a decision. I am somewhere in the middle.

What to look forward to during the 2018 NFL Offseason

It appears the writing on the wall reads that Taylor will be shown the door after this season. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to see the Bills picking up a cheap veteran QB to serve as a training camp arm or third string QB. Then draft a QB on the second or third day.

At this point, they might announce there will be a 3 man QB competition between a veteran QB, Peterman, and a day two or three rookie QB to be named later.

More from BuffaLowDown

Just prior to the 2018 Buffalo Bills’ Training Camp. Meanwhile, Beane will have otherwise drafted their types of players on both sides of the ball. Then come out and say they are building to win now with their guys.

I’m not very confident that at this point, that  Bills’ General Manager will trade away a package of higher picks to move up to pick up “their guy,” at quarterback at the 2018 NFL draft. Knowing they have Peterman already on the roster.

Peterman is the man

If I am on to something here. Peterman should start the rest of the year. Again, in my opinion, this has nothing to do with making or missing the playoffs this year.

Do fans at this point really want to see the Bills be like the Cincinnati Bengals from four or five years ago? Make the playoffs just to lose in the wildcard game against the third strongest division winner. I want playoff games at New Era Field.

I’d like to see the Bills put the entire AFC on notice. Leaving no doubt that the road to the Super Bowl goes through Buffalo. It’s fairly obvious this quarterback non-controversy is much more about Rick Dennison. Then it has anything to do with either Tyrod Taylor or Nathan Peterman. One last time, can Dennison develop a young, rookie QB or not?

Next: McDermott & Bills need to commit to playoffs or the process

Only time will tell. If I were a betting man, I’d bet heavily on the not. Go Bills!
