There was a vast amount of optimism surrounding Nathan Peterman this week, but it is safe to now put that to rest.
The Buffalo Bills lost to the Los Angeles Chargers 54 – 24 on Sunday, and have given up 30 points or more in five straight games.
Nathan Peterman crushed a crazy statistic on Sunday. That wild stat is that he threw more interceptions than Tyrod Taylor has this year, but he did so in one half of football.
There are no excuses for this type of quarterback play. Yes, Kelvin Benjamin went down early. Yes, the offensive line caused Nathan Peterman to be under pressure 33.3% of dropbacks (12th most of 28 week 11 QBs). But that can not wipe away the fact that Nathan Peterman threw five interceptions on fourteen attempts.
Nathan Peterman was Pro Football Focus‘ lowest graded quarterback on Sunday with a game grade of 32.0. Peterman did not complete a pass on the five plays of which he was under pressure. It was a tough adjustment for an offense that is used to having a quarterback in the backfield who can avoid pressure and make plays happen outside of the pocket. It is a tough transition to a Nathan Peterman type.
Tyrod Taylor stepped into the game and nearly tripled Nathan Peterman’s passing yards. It is important to note that this was done in garbage time, but just about the whole entire game can be referred to as, “garbage time.”
Where do we go from here?
Okay so we’ve established that Nathan Peterman had a historically bad performance, but what do we do now? Do we ride with Nathan Peterman for the rest of the year and just take someone in the draft? I’m nearly positive that Peterman’s middle name is “Interception.”
Or, do we roll with Tyrod Taylor and try to salvage the season of which the Buffalo Bills have left. The team is still very much in playoff contention.
The Buffalo Bills have a tough matchup with the angry Kansas City Chiefs next week at 1 o’clock.
