PFF declares center Ryan Groy secret superstar
By Connor Price
In 2014, Ryan Groy was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent. Fast forward to 2017, and the Buffalo Bills are matching the Rams offer to sign him to a two-year deal. Groy was given an opportunity mid-season and exceeded expectations.
After Eric Wood had broken his leg, it was next man up. Ryan Groy stepped into his spot and did not miss a beat.
Here is what Pro Football Focus had to say about Ryan Groy:
"2016 snaps: 539"
"Key stat: Did not allow a sack all season from 291 pass-blocking snaps."
"Groy started the final seven games of the season for the Bills, filling in for Eric Wood in the middle of the offensive line and playing largely well over that span, particularly in the final two games of the season against tough divisional rivals on the defensive line in the Dolphins and Jets. Groy didn’t allow a sack all season, and surrendered just nine total pressures – seven across those final seven games."
LeSean McCoy had his best three week stretch in weeks 14-16. This was when Groy was performing at his peak, along with the rest of the offensive line.
With Sammy Watkins and LeSean McCoy featured in the Buffalo offense, it is easy to overlook key pieces such as the offensive line. The offensive line doesn’t always receive the credit they’re due, especially when they aren’t the players scoring the touchdowns.
Football is a team game. Nothing LeSean McCoy accomplished this season could have been done without the O-line, including Ryan Groy.
It is shocking that PFF declared Groy the Bills secret superstar because he will begin the season as a reserve when Eric Wood is back to full strength. Groy earned a five million dollar contract, which is a generous amount for a back-up offensive lineman.
Ryan Groy has obviously showed promise. It will be interesting to see when he becomes a first string player whether it is with the Bills or with another team.
