The Buffalo Bills defense will not hurt itself as much this year

Sean McDermott preaches about process, discipline and character. There is no way he is going to tolerate penalties on the defense the way Rex Ryan did. McDermott will find a way to either correct the players’ behavior or don’t be shocked if he were to bench a guy like Jerry Hughes if he is unable to control his emotions during a game.

According to FootballDB.com, the Bills were 10th in the league in penalties last year with 111 and 12th in penalty yards given up with 955 yards. That’s almost ten football fields worth of penalties! The Bills were 4th in the league with seven delay of game penalties partly due to poor communication from the sidelines which McDermott will correct. His philosophy and steady leadership can also help reduce other avoidable penalties such as roughing the passer, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct and personal fouls.

These are the top five reasons I believe the Bills defense will return to being a Top 10 unit in the league in 2017. Of course, there are many other things that will factor into a successful season for the Bills defense in addition to these reasons.

The icing on the cake would be if the reports of Marcell Dareus buying into Sean McDermott’s system are true, we could see the old Mr. Big Stuff wreaking havoc in the middle of the field for Buffalo. If that were to happen and the rest of the unit can stay relatively healthy, this Bills defense could potentially even crack the Top 5 in the league.
