The Buffalo Bills are fresh off a productive draft, but haven’t wasted any time as the second wave of free agency gets started.

The Buffalo Bills added 6 new rookies to their roster this season, but there are still plenty of holes and spots to fill before the 90-man rosters are due. Without a lot of cap space, Buffalo will have to play it smart, which has been the motto ever since Sean McDermott walked into One Bills Drive.

So far, so good.

The Buffalo Bills made a couple of moves leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft, which included signing veteran quarterback T.J. Yates, defensive end Ian Seau and safety Trae Elston. They also had the opportunity to match an offer sheet and retain backup running back Mike Gillislee, but declined that option.

With the draft ending a week ago, the second wave of free agency has begun and the Bills haven’t wasted any time getting back into the groove of things. With that much more pressure off their shoulders, the team will now finish sculpting the roster and prepare it for training camp.

Since the draft came to an end, the Buffalo Bills have added two players to their roster that will help bring depth and veteran presence to the defensive back group.

Shareece Wright signed with the team on May 1st and comes from the Baltimore Ravens. A 7-year veteran at 30 years old, Wright will bring experience to a young cornerback squad that includes the Bills’ first round draft pick Tre’Davious White. He started 15 games over the past two seasons with Baltimore and 27 starts with the Chargers in his first four years in the league. Although he has just one career interception, he has 31 pass breakups and 229 combined tackles.

The other addition, Charles James, was claimed off waivers a day later. James was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Monday and has been in the league since joining the New York Giants in 2013. He’s a player that loves to play football and is always ready to step up when his name is called. I think Sean McDermott will fall in love with him — if he hasn’t already. He can even play a little bit of running back.

With the two cornerback additions, the Buffalo Bills now have 10 total on their roster. With that being said, it’s obvious that most of them will be fighting for a roster spot. Here’s an early look at what the cornerback depth chart looks like, listed from starters to backup to depth.

  1. Ronald Darby
  2. Tre’Davious White
  3. Kevon Seymour
  4. Leonard Johnson
  5. Marcus Cromartie
  6. Shareece Wright
  7. Bradley Sylve
  8. Marcus Roberson
  9. Charles James II
  10. Charles Gaines

The way I see it, players from 5 on down will be fighting for a spot, although Leonard Johnson isn’t even penciled in. I believe he’ll have a spot though, considering his ties with Sean McDermott.

The additions of Shareece Wright and Charles James weren’t the only announcements to come from the Buffalo Bills since the draft ended. The team has also held a couple of visits recently, some for the vacant GM position and some of them potential players.
