The Buffalo Bills‘ approach to hiring an offensive coordinator has been not as calculated as head coach, and that may end up hurting the team.

Maybe things aren’t lining up for the Buffalo Bills and their newly hired head coach Sean McDermott as perfectly as the team made them seem to when he was first hired.

Now over a week into his new position with the Bills, McDermott has filled quite a bit of his staff roles, but still has a few huge questions to answer. Many of those questions fall on the offensive side of the ball, where McDermott is notably inexperienced and needs all the help he can get from an offensive coordinator.

Of course, once he gets one. It looked as if Greg Olson was going to be a lock as the team’s offensive coordinator moving forward, but after plenty of rumors of Olson coming to the Bills — a hire that would have been pretty good, but could have been better — Olson took the Los Angeles Rams’ open position as a quarterback coach.

The Bills took an approach with their head coaching position that was very direct and motivated. Rather than running around with many different options on their plate, they only interviewed four candidates, and seemed to know exactly what they were looking for. With the offensive coordinator slot, McDermott seems to have no idea what he’s looking for, or perhaps too much of an idea.

McDermott also needs to figure out what to do with the quarterback situation, although that may be a decision that is made by team general manager Doug Whaley. That quarterback situation is the biggest thing that needs to be solved in order for the Bills to get wins next season. All signs seem to be pointing to Tyrod Taylor being on his way out, but we don’t know for sure.

The offensive coordinator that is brought in will certainly have a lot of say in whatever quarterbacks the Bills pursue if Taylor is, in fact, out of the picture. The indecisiveness with an offensive coordinator might show that the Bills are still unsure of what to do with their quarterback.

The bottom line is that the Bills need to figure out what they want and make a move. Whether they know what quarterback they want or what offensive coordinator they want — Ken Dorsey is coming up as a front-runner for the job with Olson out of the picture — they need to pursue them as hard as they can and get them, and subsequently build around them. There is no time to dilly-dally with their decision.
