AFC East Update: Week 2 Scores, Stats and Standings

With Week 2 behind us, let’s take a quick look at what happened around the AFC East on Sunday and how the standings currently look.

We are all aware at this point that the Buffalo Bills lost to the New York Jets on Thursday 37-31. It was a tough game, but one the Bills certainly could’ve had.

In the end, Tyrod Taylor’s three touchdowns and Nickell Robey-Coleman’s fumble recovery for a touchdown weren’t enough and they must now prepare for Week 3 vs. the Arizona Cardinals.

However, the Bills vs. Jets Thursday Night Football matchup wasn’t the only AFC East divisional game this week. On Sunday, the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins met in New England. These two games were very important early in the season as all four teams are still fighting to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

Here’s a look at the box score from the Patriots/Dolphins game:

Patriots’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo started the game off extremely hot with three touchdowns in the first 17 minutes of the game. The Patriots were on a 24-0 run until the Dolphins hit a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

About six minutes into the third quarter, Patriots’ running back LeGarrette Blount had a 9-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 31-3. However, that’s when the Dolphins started to mount their comeback. After a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills with just under 6 minutes left in the third quarter, the Dolphins brought the deficit to 31-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

Only 9 seconds into the fourth, Jordan Cameron received a 12-yard pass from Ryan Tannehill to bring the Dolphins within two touchdowns. With 6 minutes left in the game, they added 7 more points to their total with a 7-yard touchdown run by Kenyan Drake. With the score at 31-24, the Dolphins had plenty of time to tie the game up — or even take the lead.

However, they would stop the scoring there and the Patriots would leave Miami with a 2-0 record, leaving the Dolphins stuck with the Bills at 0-2. With the Jets victory against the Bills, they stand in the middle with an even 1-1 record.

After Week 2, Buffalo Bills’ fans are going to have to hope for a Cleveland Browns’ victory against the Dolphins, a Houston Texans’ victory against the New England Patriots, a Kansas City Chiefs’ victory against the New York Jets and of course — a Bills’ victory against the Arizona Cardinals.

That’s not too much to ask for is it?
