Buffalo Bills Training Camp: August 5th thoughts

After a day off on Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills held their fifth practice of 2015 at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY. Here are three points from Wednesday’s session:

1) There are three QBs in this race:

Tyrod Taylor

had not done very well through the first four practices of training camp. However, practice number five was a different story, as he was making more plays today than he has all summer.

Among them, Taylor hit Sammy Watkins and Deonte Thompson on back-to-back throws for a 40-yard score. Albeit against backup corners, it was nice to see him finally stay in the pocket.

Taylor then stepped up against the number one defense, and made the best throw of camp so far. He stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush, then fired a 50-yard strike to Marquise Goodwin down the middle of the field.

So after Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel started to pull away from the former Virginia Tech Hokie, he made sure everybody knew that this was still a three-man competition.

2) Karlos Williams gets golden opportunity:

At the beginning of practice, it was announced that Boobie Dixon would be out up to a month due to a calf injury. Enter former Florida State Seminole Karlos Williams, who has a big opportunity to now make an impression.

The rookie has already caught the eye of fans and players alike, making nice cuts and bursting through holes at the line of scrimmage. But now he could get increased first-team reps, which means the eyes of coaches will be fixated on him even more than they were previously.

The door is also open now for Bryce Brown, who was regarded as the odd man out of this running back core at the start of camp. Maybe he can burst onto the scene, making it a tough cut in the backfield.

3) A healthy Marcus Easley is great for the Bills:

Out of the University of Connecticut, Marcus Easley was considered a great pick for Buffalo when he was drafted.

Now entering his fifth season, the former Huskie has only played one full season. A great player on special teams, he has yet to have a chance to prove himself in a receiving core that consists of Watkins, Robert Woods, and Percy Harvin.

He’s made some impressive catches already in training camp, and I’d expect that to continue if he can stay off the injury report. At 6’2″, 217 lbs, he could be a very good red zone target for whoever ends up under center for week one against the Indianapolis Colts.

However, first he’ll have to survive a battle with Chris Hogan, Thompson and others vying to be a pass catcher in 2015.
