Leodis McKelvin is the subject of today’s player profile. Been with the Buffalo Bills since being drafted in 2008 with the 11th overall pick and was Buffalo’s highest drafted cornerback of all time at that point. He was also the first player that was drafted out of Troy by the Buffalo Bills and only the 27th overall player drafted from the school.
McKelvin has played in 89 games in total for the Buffalo Bills having started 55 of them. In those 89 games he has 11 interceptions with one being a touchdown. He also has accumulated 234 tackles and 42 assists. Not only a cornerback, Leodis McKelvin has also been one of Buffalo’s top returners for both kick and punt returns.
In the same time frame, Leodis McKelvin has 92 punt returns for exactly 1000 yards and 3 have been taken to the house. He also has 95 kick returns for 2471 yards and one that was taken back for a touchdown.
Mckelvin signed a 4 year deal back in 2013. He was coming off having a solid year for the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and it did extend into 2014 until he was lost halfway through the season due to a broken ankle.
In 2014, Leodis McKelvin was the first Buffalo Bills player to post consecutive interceptions on defensive plays since Kirby Jackson did it in 1989 against the Miami Dolphins. He also set a eprsonal record with 4 interceptions in the same game against the Minnesota Vikings.
He is expected to compete this year with rookie Ronald Darby, who to this point has yet to disappoint. McKelvin, is set to have another solid year this year and could be considered a bounce back player for the Buffalo Bills. Even if he loses out on the starting job for the Buffalo Bills, there are a number of sub-packages that we could see Leodis McKelvin in throughout the year.
Leodis McKelvin has been a leader in the defensive backfield and will look to do the same this year. The defensive backfield for the Buffalo Bills is one that has a lot of talent in a strong defensive system. Only injuries should stop this group of players from being the top defensive backfield in the league.
