Rex Ryan Cancels OTAs to Bring Bills to Jim Kelly’s Golf Tournament
By Carson Mason
In the midst of the chaos of OTAs, many NFL teams are busy running drills and figuring out which players will blossom into NFL talents. However, on Monday morning Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan cancelled OTAs (organized team activities) and chose to do something a little cooler; he took the whole Bills squad to Jim Kelly’s 29th annual charity golf tournament.

Since the whole team attended an organized event together, their escapades at the tournament do count towards one of their ten spring OTAs. That being said, the tournament was still beneficial for the Bills players. The golf tournament was a great way for the team to bond as friends rather than just as teammates and allowed the team to relax and have fun together.

Plus, it was a great way to honor former Bills QB, Jim Kelly, who previously battled squamous cell carcinoma, a form of jaw cancer. And who doesn’t love Jim Kelly?
Kelly, although unable to attend his tournament last year after being hospitalized, was present this year. His annual tournament is attended by many celebrities and sports personalities, including fellow Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino and host Chris Berman, according to ESPN. The proceeds from the tournament go towards charities that help disabled children in the New York area.
According to Yahoo Sports, Kelly was in good spirits at his tournament and was thankful to be at his own event.
"“It’s so good to see my friends and see people I haven’t seen in over a year, because I was not here last year at this time.”"
Kelly, who has been cancer free since August, went on to say that he is feeling good.
"“And it’s good because after last year, the money we were able to give out to all the charities, that makes you feel good because even though I couldn’t be here, it continued, it moved on and we are still making a difference.”"
