Buffalo Bills Do Not Use Franchise Tag

The deadline for franchise tags and transition tags have come and gone.  We have seen teams use the franchise tag on a couple of the more high profile players and we even saw the Miami Dolphins use the transition tag on TE Charles Clay to make it inevitably harder to obtain the services of the highly sought after weapon.

The Buffalo Bills, however, have not and did not use any tag by the deadline.  It was reported by Doug Whaley earlier in the afternoon that they were not going to use either of the tags available to them to secure the services of any player able to be tagged.

"“We have chosen not to use the franchise or transition tags this year,” said Whaley.– BuffaloBills.com"

With the Buffalo Bills not tagging any player, including Jerry Hughes, who would have been the only one that would have made sense to tag, there is also a lack of information coming from One Bills Drive that is also surrounding this announcement.

No tag, and no deal with Jerry Hughes either.  This means that at this point, the Buffalo Bills must feel very confident that they have a deal that is very close to being completed with Hughes or did not feel that the 14.78 million that he would have gotten from tagging him, was worth another year of his services and extra time that would have been or could have been used to lock up a long term contract.

So at this point, the Buffalo Bills, as far as we know, are not closer to securing Jerry Hughes and his talent for the next couple of years.  As far as we know, there is no contract in place, no tag has been used, and the Buffalo Bills and Rex Ryan might very well be losing a productive part of this defensive line when March 10th rolls around.

The Buffalo Bills, in essence have about 6 more days to get a contract in place because an open negotiation period will begin on March 7th where all the free agents can begin to seek contracts from other teams, but nothing can be finalized until free agency opens on March 10th.

Any thoughts on Doug Whaley and the Buffalo Bills not using the franchise tag when no contract is in place with Jerry Hughes?
