This offseason may end up being a tough one for Bills fans as we all wait to see what happens with defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Now knowing he has a second interview lined up with the Browns it may lead the Bills to look elsewhere for a new coordinator. As a result it will have this defense possibly learning and adopting to yet another new defense. My question is will they have Marcell Dareus on this roster regardless of what happens?
Not that long ago I did a piece on what to do with Marcell and now I’m leaning towards trading him. I hope the Bills at least have this circulating in their minds as I think this guy could be bad news moving forward. Dareus neglecting to fulfill his obligation for this team is just down right terrible.
What he did during the season not only hurt himself but also may have a left a bad taste in both the coaching staff and his teammates mouths. Putting himself ahead of his teammates and the organization caused him to be benched twice in the latter part of the season if you didn’t know. Being frequently late to meetings and not changing his ways after being warned may have set off alarms to this new staff. A very select few of guys are allowed to do what they have always dreamed about but some think it’s there right and forget it’s a privilege. In Marcell’s case after the first mishap I believe this should have been over and done with as things happen. He obviously elected to continue to do what he wanted and he paid for it with playing time. Some may think his relationship with this coaching staff didn’t start off in the right direction and just went downhill throughout the year.
One thing the Bills have going for them this year if they decide to trade Dareus was the good season he had. Putting up his best stats as a pro since being selected 3rd overall a few years back. A team may very well be looking to give something of value back to this Bills team to build with as Dareus’s status after his entry contract is unknown. If I had to guess I think he would walk when it’s all said and done. Simply the Bills could eliminate two problems by getting his negative attitude of this team and also not just letting good talent leave the team.
The Bills have had problems with talent leaving this roster in the past but I hope this staff can finally change that. Let’s see what happens but I first wouldn’t be surprised if he was dealt and secondly I wouldn’t be upset all at. Guys in this league need to do what they’ve done their whole and just play football. I will be watching this closely as I think this staff will not put up with this moving forward.. JUST IN: Marcell Dareus has been added to this year’s Pro Bowl. Another thing the Bills could use to yield a trade.
