In a move that came early this morning, and beat free agency by a day and a half, the Buffalo Bills and Jerry Hughes have come to terms to a five year deal.

It had gone back and forth with both sides in negotiations for about 2 weeks and updates had been coming during those 2 weeks in the form of, “both sides are working to get a deal done”.

As Buffalonians, we had heard this many times before and it has always seemed to be that a deal was never able to get done and this or that player heads off into the sunset to play for a different team.  But not this year, not under Rex Ryan’s team.

Jerry Hughes is set to be a Buffalo Bills player for the next 5 years.  Under this deal, Hughes will get a total of 45 million over the 5 years and 20 million of that is guaranteed.

With Jerry Hughes being one of the top if not the top free agent at defensive end, I think that the Buffalo Bills may have gotten a bit of a hometown discount on this deal, but in any way, they did not have to use the franchise tag on Hughes and in essence saved about 5 million by not doing so.

The Buffalo Bills, to date, have had an active offseason and it technically has not even started yet.  They have signed guard Ritchie Incognito, traded for an elite running back in LeSean McCoy and brought in a veteran quarterback via trade as well; Matt Cassel.  Securing Jerry Hughes for the next five years was a fantastic move seeing as this defensive line is young and still very dominant.  The old man on the team line is Kyle Williams and he can still be a force within the middle.

What is next and on tap for the Buffalo Bills are the offseason is set to actually begin in just over 24 hours?  Will they still be aggressive when free agency opens and go after that big name player or two? Just over a day a way.  Sit back relax and watch the excitement happen.
