Are The Bills Close To Being Contenders?

The Bills going into their seventh game of the season in my eyes have shown good progress thus far. The draft and free agency are basically the only ways to build your team (trades do happen) in this league and the Bills are finally seeing how it works.

With the exception of the top round players in the past few years the Bills drafts have been terrible. They may hit on a guy here and there but these missed drafts certainly hurt this organization. Building through the draft has been where these teams who continue to win do it.

This past draft I think was a great start in showing what can help a team in just one year. First of all the QB position was finally addressed but in my eyes was a little late and definitely was not the year for them to get their guy of the future. EJ may be the guy but with who came out the year before and looking ahead to next year makes me wonder if this organization even thought about that.

The other big selection for this team was at linebacker in Kiko Alonso. This team for as long as I can remember has not had a dominate linebacker. A player that could play on all downs and situations and is just that guy you can depend on is what I believe this team finally got. Alonso coming in had many thinking he was going to start and play well but did one better and is playing great. Toss in some NFL ready receivers, defensive backs that will need some work, kicker and tight end makes up a pretty good class.

That said I wonder if this team has another draft like this will they finally contend. Also this team needs to continue on the free agency pickups as they have been pretty good. Not always going after the top player but instead getting that solid player that just comes in and plays well. Going forward I would like to look at another linebacker, pass rusher, corner and call me crazy but another QB. Aaron Murray will be available in the 2nd or 3rd round and would fit in great with this team. Next season this team might finally contend and put together a successful season with their new additions.
